Lee Martin has become the latest former Manchester United player to turn to management.
The list of former Manchester United players to become managers is always growing.
For 26 years, the Red Devils were managed by the greatest coach football has ever seen, with Sir Alex Ferguson responsible for influencing many players during a spell that saw the club win 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues, and many other domestic trophies.
Many of those players have turned to management, including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Gary Neville and Roy Keane.
Now, it’s time for Lee Martin to join that list, aged 38.
Former United players have enjoyed mixed experiences in the managerial world, but that is the nature of the job.
Lee Martin becomes Welling United manager
Lee Martin came through United’s youth academy and made three senior appearances for the club before becoming a bit of a journeyman, representing 17 clubs throughout his playing career.
After experiencing football at many different levels, Martin’s first job in management will see him take charge of Welling United.
Martin has been tasked with rebuilding Welling United following relegation from the National League South in 2024/25.
The non-league side announced Martin’s appointment on Saturday morning.
Speaking to Welling United media after a deal to become manager, Martin expressed his excitement about transitioning from playing to management.
“I’m making that transition from playing into management and I’m delighted to get it over the line – I can’t wait to get started,” said Martin.
“The rebuild has started. We’re ahead of the curve in terms of recruitment, we’ve highlighted some good players and the big thing we’re going after now is character. We want good characters around the place because we want to merge the players and supporters back together.”

As mentioned above, Martin played for 17 different clubs throughout his playing career.
Eight clubs took him on loan, including six during his time at United.
