Former Man Utd man scores in ‘historic’ 7 goal-thriller that had a dramatic 91st-minute winner

Daley Blind is on top of the world after leaving Manchester United – well, on top of Spain at least.

His Girona side are pulling off one of the shocks of the European campaign, going toe to toe with La Liga giants Real Madrid in a thrilling title race.

Blind’s performances have been a huge catalyst for this, which have led to shouts he’s playing like ‘prime Maldini‘ for his new side.

In what was a scintillating affair, he put in another performance reminiscent of the Italian icon last night.

Daley Blind scores in seven-goal thriller

Daley Blind featured and scored in a dramatic 4-3 home win against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, which keeps them level on points with Real Madrid at the top of La Liga.

Former Chelsea forward Alvaro Morata bagged himself a hat-trick in the affair to claw his side back level, but Blind’s valiant Girona scored a 91st-minute winner through Ivan Martin to snatch all three points.

Girona scored just two minutes in thanks to a Valery Fernandez curling effort, before Atletico made it 1-1 just 12 minutes later through Morata.

The home side made it 2-1 in the 26th minute through Savio and then got a third in the 39th when former Red Devil Blind netted with what was a tap-in.

Morata then stole the show – netting twice in quick succession in the 44th and 54th to bag his hat-trick and send Diego Simeone’s side level.

But then a moment of brilliance won the game. Martin’s sensational 91st-minute strike sent Girona fans into a state of ecstasy and, more importantly, kept them level-pegging with Real.

Girona coach on ‘historic’ victory over Atletico Madrid

Despite still keeping up with Madrid, Girona coach Michel banished any talk of winning the title and believes his side simply can’t keep up with Carlo Ancelotti’s – although he did call the game ‘historic’.

Michel said: “I think it’s good to recognise that we are making history, eh? It can’t be something normal we have 12 wins out of 15 games.”

“It’s not the objective [winning La Liga]. First, to think game by game and try to reach Europe, which would make history for this club.

“Today a really great game, really difficult, did a lot well. Atletico as well, a great game. My players have an incredible mentality: resilience in the bad moments, always give everything to take the match forward.

“For me the success of these players is that. Our dream is to make Europe, but we can’t fight toe-to-toe with Real Madrid. To have the level of points of the big teams is very difficult.”

Michel is maybe being humble here and downplaying his squad’s monumental efforts. With just one loss all season, and some superb performances – there is simply no saying that they couldn’t go all the way.
