Scott McTominay is not the only former Manchester United star who is thriving after leaving Old Trafford.

Scott McTominay has been a revelation for Napoli since completing a £25m move in the summer transfer window.

It has been a frustrating trend at Manchester United for in recent years that players have left Old Trafford and gone on to shine.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils have struggled to make successful signings of their own – so much so that there is a complete lineup of flop transfers made since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

There has been a mass clearout at United under Erik ten Hag, which has only continued since the Ineos takeover in December.

One of the boldest decisions made by the Dutchman was to let David de Gea leave as a free agent in 2023.

David de Gea in great form with Fiorentina

David de Gea became a club legend during his 12-year career with United and features in the list of Manchester United’s best ever goalkeepers.

He certainly didn’t get the farewell he deserved when he left in 2023, but it is great to see the Spanish shot-stopper back in action.

After taking a year away from football following his United exit, De Gea joined Italian side Fiorentina this summer.

He immediately hit the ground running with the Serie A club with De Gea dropping a masterclass in his second appearance for the club.

De Gea has gone from strength to strength, and his best performance so far came against AC Milan after he saved two penalties in one match.

It was painfully ironic for United fans, who will have bad memories of De Gea’s poor penalty record at Old Trafford – including failing to save any of Villarreal’s 11 penalties in the Europa League final.

David de Gea has been ‘truly incredible’

It is fair to say De Gea’s move to Fiorentina has gone down well in Italy.

Former Fiorentina goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano has now spoken out about De Gea’s impressive form, and he was full of praise for the 33-year-old.

As quoted by TuttoMercatoWeb, Viviano said: “I’m surprised at those who are surprised. Three years ago he was one of the best goalkeepers in the world and today for Fiorentina he is a luxury, with all due respect for a team I love.

“It seemed like I was dreaming when I heard that he would compete for a place with Terracciano, but what are we talking about?

“De Gea is not a penalty saver, so he was truly incredible. I really liked the save on Chukwueze because there you really risk making a fool of yourself, he was very good at saving the team”.
