Forget Carrick, Mason Mount says Man Utd hired a ‘special person’ who impressed him from day one

Mason Mount hasn’t been able to contribute much to Michael Carrick’s Man Utd, but one hire by the club impressed him from day one.

The player who suffered the biggest blow from Ruben Amorim’s sacking is Mason Mount, as he was one of the first names on the teamsheet whenever he was fit.

Michael Carrick would have liked to use him more than he has, but injuries have kept halting his progress.

Still, after working with Carrick these past few months, Mount has been extremely impressed with one of the club’s hires from day one.

Mason Mount raves about Steve Holland

Man Utd’s coaching staff under Carrick has garnered rave reviews for the way they’ve distributed responsibilities among themselves.

Steve Holland is one of the most respected names in the English coaching landscape, so it was quite a coup for United to get him.

Holland’s influence on the team has been clear to see in their defensive solidity, while his own mentality has been a refreshing change.

Mount has a history with Holland, having worked with him for England when he was a part of Gareth Southgate’s staff.

The midfielder picked up from where he left off with Holland when he arrived at Carrington, being impressed from day one.

He said [via Manchester Evening News]: “I hadn’t seen him in a while. He’s someone who knows so much about football. He’s got such a football brain, a lot of experience. He brings that kind of calm confidence.

“There are probably not many in world football that have his resume and his experience, is there? He’s a special person, and within football, he kind of goes under the radar, maybe a little bit.”

Holland can get Mount up to speed

In many ways, Mount is perfect for a coach like Holland, whose coaching philosophy has non-negotiables around hard work and sacrifice.

What do you expect from Mason Mount between now and the end of the season? Where does he fit in?

Mount’s body has failed him often, but nobody can fault his effort when he’s fit, which is why managers keep singling him out as their favourite.

Holland knows what makes Mount tick, the problems he’s had since joining United, and how to get the best out of him.

He needs to make Mount his personal project at this point, because United desperately need this signing to work out, even if the boat to call him a success has already sailed.
