Five things learned from Manchester United 0-1 Atletico Madrid

Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League after Atletico Madrid beat the Red Devils 1-0 at Old Trafford and won the last-16 tie 2-1 on aggregate.

Here are five things we learned from the clash at the Theatre of Dreams…

When will Old Trafford next host a Champions League game

The Manchester United fans created an electric atmosphere, but Diego Simeone’s side silenced the crowd when Renan Lodi headed home an Antoine Griezmann cross.

But with the Reds crashing out of this year’s competition, it’s hard to know when our next Champions League will come about.

Ralf Rangnick’s side are up against it when qualifying for next season’s top club competition.

The Reds are only a point behind Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, but the Gunners have three games in hand.

Rangnick makes bold calls

The German made three changes to the side that beat Tottenham 3-2 on Saturday.

That meant that Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford started on the bench with Bruno Fernandes and Anthony Elanga coming into the starting line-up.

In the second half, United’s interim boss brought off Fernandes much to the Portuguese international’s dismay.

As the game wore on and with United chasing the game, Rangnick threw caution to the wind and brought on Edinson Cavani to replace Fred.

Jan Oblak delivers big moments

The Slovenian would have been disappointed with his role in Manchester United’s equaliser at the Wanda Metropolitano three weeks ago.

Anthony Elanga’s scuffed effort squeezed passed the Atletico number one, but Oblak more than redeemed himself in Manchester.

The Swedish under-21 international thought he had scored passed Oblak for the second time in as many matches but the teenager’s effort came back off Oblak’s head.

In the second half, Oblak produced an outstretched world class to deny Raphael Varane’s towering header.

Rare cameo for Juan Mata

With Rangnick exhausting every possible option from the bench, Juan Mata was summoned from the bench.

It was the Spanish international’s first outing since the FA Cup penalty shootout defeat to Middlesbrough last month.

It was the last roll of the dice from the German which was a clear act of desperation. United had no clear formation in the latter stages and we lacked ideas of how to break down a stubborn Atletico side.

Another frustrating night for Rashford

With Elanga being favoured over Marcus Rashford, the England international would have likely been frustrated before he entered the pitch.

But when the academy graduate came onto the pitch, it was yet another sloppy performance by our number 10.

He gave the ball away cheaply and looked bereft of confidence, he couldn’t even get the basics right.
