Five goals in four games, ex-Man Utd youngster who worked with Van Nistelrooy finding form after exit

The grass is not always greener on the other side, but one former Man Utd player is finding form after betting on himself and leaving the club recently.

Not many permanent exits were sanctioned by Man Utd in the January transfer window, and even one that was, that of Tyrell Malacia, was canceled due to squad depth concerns.

However, United took a different view with academy products, prioritising their development over any potential nominal fee.

As a result, one permanent exit was sanctioned on January 30, and the player is now rediscovering form in senior football.

Joe Hugill is loving life at Kilmarnock in Scotland

Scotland has become somewhat of a safe haven for Man Utd youngsters this season, with Jacob Devaney shining at St Mirren, and Ethan Williams having a nice start at Falkirk before going off the boil.

Scotland is also where Joe Hugill turned to upon departing Old Trafford, joining Kilmarnock in the January transfer window.

Utd had recalled him from a loan at Barnet that month, and it was decided that the best way forward for him was to find stability in senior football with a permanent transfer.

He didn’t take long to net his first goal for them, scoring in a thriller against Celtic in February, and he has used that as a launchpad since then.

Hugill has scored five goals in his last four games, including consecutive doubles in the last two, all of which have seen his side emerge victorious.

One was against Devaney’s St Mirren, a 3-0 win in which Hugill didn’t score, the only team to keep him quiet during this spell.

At 22, it was high time that Hugill got stable senior football, and he’s making the most of all he learned from working with Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Hugill was signed from Sunderland’s academy as a fine prospect, and he set the youth football stage alight at Man Utd.

Winning the FA Youth Cup two years after joining the club was a high point, as he kept scoring for fun at the academy football level.

His peak with the senior team came during the 2024/25 pre-season when he scored against Rangers, crediting Van Nistelrooy’s work with him following the goal.

Unfortunately, he couldn’t stand out in the rigours of the English football league, which led to his permanent departure, but he’s showing why he was a high-quality poacher at United.

Kilmarnock are the first team to benefit from him, but if he continues this vein of form, they won’t be the last, as bigger and better things will be in store for him in the future.

For now, he will relish the chance to have some stability in senior football, and Kilmarnock will be glad that it’s come at their club.
