Manchester United sent scouts to watch Dutch ace Frenkie De Jong in action earlier this month, according to The Sun.

Midfield ace De Jong is valued at around £50 million by Ajax.

This would require a substantial investment from United, similar to the fee they laid out for Fred.

Here are five facts about Frenkie De Jong

1)  De Jong is 21-years-old and plays predominantly as a central midfielder, but that is not the only position he can play. This season he has made four of his 12 appearances as a centre-back, including in midweek in the Champions League, a 3-0 win over AEK. He partnered Daley Blind in defence.

2) He made his international debut for Holland earlier this month, going up against Paul Pogba’s France. He lined up in the same team as former United star Memphis Depay.

3) He has the approval of former United and Ajax boss Louis van Gaal. He said earlier this year, “What I see from Frenkie de Jong of Ajax … That’s a talent.”

4) Dutch legend Arie Haan went a step further, comparing him to German legend Franz Beckenbauer. He said: “De Jong is a better version of Franz Beckenbauer, because he has speed and passes the ball easily.”

5) United are going to face some serious competition for De Jong’s signature. Catalan newspaper Sport report Barcelona’s board are in ‘unanimous agreement’ they want to sign the Dutchman.
