Facundo Pellistri’s Manchester United career looks to be over after latest snub

Manchester United saw Alejandro Garnacho light up Old Trafford last night, showing what he can be capable of.

Another young player likely saw his final chance pass him by, with Facundo Pellistri snubbed entirely.

The Uruguayan was an unused substitute for United, as he has been throughout the month of October and early November, since returning from injury.

While this is a step closer to United’s first team than his time on loan at Alaves, it is also as close as he is going to get.

With Jadon Sancho and Antony out injured, and the Carabao Cup lending itself to rotation, Pellistri will never get as good an opportunity to start as he did last night.

Erik ten Hag simply wasn’t interested. If he wanted to start Pellistri, or felt he was ready to contribute to his team, he would have found a way to involve him last night.

January exit likely for Pellistri

Pellistri’s agent spoke last week to suggest the winger was looking to depart the club in the January transfer window, which makes sense, he needs to play.

He told ESPN Uruguay: “I think with a good World Cup, as we think he’s going to have, his departure is imminent.”

Pellistri’s place in Uruguay’s squad for Qatar was confirmed yesterday. So it wasn’t the worst 24 hours for the former Penarol winger.

An Old Trafford appearance really would have topped his night off, and at least given him one small window of opportunity to impress the fans and fight for his future.

After two years, Pellistri is still waiting for his debut at Manchester United. He might never make one. Last night was his best chance.

United may decide a loan move is smart in January, but Erik ten Hag appears to have given a quite decisive verdict with his actions, that Pellistri is not a player he feels is ready.

Considering that Ten Hag has shown a willingness to introduce fresh talent with Garnacho, this latest snub for Pellistri shows the winger that it is time to move on.

His Manchester United career could be over. If it ever really started at all.
