Facundo Pellistri was a second half substitute for Uruguay in their World Cup defeat to Portugal.

Having started Uruguay’s opener against South Korea, Pellistri was utilised as an impact sub against Portugal, coming on after 60 minutes.

The Manchester United winger showed his quality, with his pace and willingness to run at the Portugal defence causing problems.

Portugal won the game 1-0, with United star Bruno Fernandes scoring the goal, which Cristiano Ronaldo had initially tried to claim.

Pellistri picked out for praise

Pellistri was involved right away, getting in behind the Portugal defence to create a chance. Minutes later his pass led to Maxi Gomez hitting a shot against the post.

ITV commentator Ally McCoist praised the Manchester United youngster’s performance.

He said: “Excellent work from the substitute Pellistri there – it’s a good ball across.

“Pellistri’s looked really lively in the opening minutes since he’s come on, really direct.

“He’s been good, he’s been lively he’s been direct.”

Manchester United signed Facundo Pellistri from Uruguayan side Penarol in 2020.

He is yet to play a game for the club despite making it into the Uruguay national team. One year of his United spell was spent on loan at Alaves.

United manager Erik ten Hag has included Pellistri in his squads but has not utilised him, recently snubbing him in the Carabao Cup clash against Aston Villa.

Pellistri’s agent told ESPN Uruguay that he expects the winger to leave in January, but did not specify whether on loan or permanently.

His performance last night highlighted his talent, and Pellistri is only 20. A loan may be a wiser choice for United, as he has clearly got quality – he just needs to go and play regularly so he can continue to develop.
