Facundo Pellistri provides superb assist for Cavani goal in Uruguay win

Manchester United signed two Uruguayan players on the same day back in October 2020.

Such is the lack of cohesion at the club, that Edinson Cavani and Facundo Pellistri never played a single match together for United.

Last night they showed what could have been, with Pellistri providing a superb assist for Cavani to score his first goal in a brace as Uruguay beat Mexico 3-0.

These were Cavani’s first goals since February – for Uruguay. He did not score at all for United in 2022, with his last strike against Newcastle in December.

Cavani has now been released by United with his contract up, while Pellistri hopes his Red Devils career can finally take off.

For the last season Pellistri has been wasting his time at La Liga’s bottom placed club Alaves, who churned through three managers and did not select him to start a single game in 2022.

Pellistri has been called up for Uruguay consistently despite this, and his latest performance for his country may just have booked his World Cup 2022 spot.

Facundo Pellistri provides superb assist

This was Pellistri’s second assist for Uruguay in four international appearances. It demonstrated his willingness to take players on, to run with the ball and chase lost causes, also showcasing his speed and crossing ability.

He played 73 minutes of the 3-0 win, also working hard defensively, making three interceptions.

Pellistri, 20, is the type of talent who new manager Erik ten Hag could really enjoy working with.

In a recent interview with ESPN South America he reinforced that playing for Manchester United remains his ‘dream’, although he half expects to be sent out on loan again.

If Ten Hag was watching last night, he may well have been impressed with the young winger.
