Facundo Pellistri 'one of the best players' as Uruguay seal World Cup 2022 place

Uruguay sealed their place at World Cup 2022 with a 1-0 win over Peru in qualification. The encounter pitted fourth against fifth, and a first half winner from Giorgan de Arrascaeta put Uruguay in an unassailable position with one game remaining,

The match saw Manchester United youngster Facundo Pellistri selected as a starter for the third game in a row.

Either Uruguay have a dearth of right wingers, or they just really like the young prospect, who has just 10 minutes game time for loan side Alaves in the whole of 2022.

Pellistri played 84 minutes in the victory, testing Peru with his willingness to run with the ball, making three successful dribbles and also working hard out of possession.

The 20-year-old won three tackles and made four ball recoveries, also winning seven duels as Uruguay dug in and ground out a crucial win.

Uruguay and Ecuador last night joined Brazil and Argentina in qualifying for the finals. One of Peru or Colombia will go into a play-off against an Asian team to determine whether South America has a fifth representative in Qatar.

Pellistri picked up a booking during the game and is now suspended for Uruguay’s final qualifier against Chile next week, and fortunately for him this is now a dead-rubber thanks to his country’s qualification, although missing out on game time when he needs it is an obvious disappointment.

The United youngster’s performance was praised, with newspaper El Observador writing: “Pellistri was, along with Sergio Rochet and Federico Valverde, one of the highest performers that Diego Alonso’s team showed during this decisive match.”

It is looking promising for Pellistri that he may well have earned himself a place in Uruguay’s World Cup squad, and United just need to provide him with a better club situation next season.

Edinson Cavani was a substitute for the game, with impressive Benfica forward Darwin Nunez selected in his place.

Cavani played the final 23 minutes from the bench, having one shot at goal, as he worked hard to help his side close out the win.

Qatar 2022 will be Cavani’s fourth World Cup, following tournaments in 2010, 2014, 2018, and he will be determined to make this final appearance his best yet.
