Facundo Pellistri could get his first and last chance at Manchester United this week

It is now more than two years since Facundo Pellistri made the move from Penarol to Manchester United.

This week’s Carabao Cup match between Manchester United and Aston Villa might provide Pellistri with the opportunity he has long been waiting for.

Manchester United are light in attack with Antony out of action with injury and Jadon Sancho’s status uncertain due to recent illness.

The cup tie is ideal for some experimentation, with Martin Dubravka potentially coming into make his debut in goal.

Pellistri is a player who looks primed to step in to fill the void on the right wing. There was even a case to do so against Sociedad last week, given United’s lack of options.

Facundo Pellistri has been waiting two years for an opportunity. During this time he has established himself as an international regular with Uruguay.

Pellistri would have wanted game time before the World Cup, and this Thursday night’s game provides an opportunity for him, and it would be his long-awaited first chance.

This is also likely to be Pellistri’s last chance in a Manchester United shirt. If he is not given a start in this fixture, then he has no hope of succeeding at the club.

Erik ten Hag has been reluctant to use him, and if he won’t do so in an early round cup tie with Jadon Sancho and Antony out, then his prospect don’t look good.

Likewise, if Pellistri fails to grasp the opportunity if he is provided one – he might as well pack his bags, another one is unlikely to come this season.

The 20-year-old is also bottom of the pecking order, and he needs to demonstrate he should rise up the queue. If he struggles, then he will remain as an afterthought, and likely be permitted to leave in January.

Pellistri’s agent suggested a January move could be on the cards. Eduardo Lasalvia told ESPN Uruguay: “I think with a good World Cup, as we think he’s going to have, his departure is imminent.”

Whether there was something lost in translation and he meant a loan move rather than a permanent one is unclear. If he cannot produce a stellar performance against Aston Villa on Thursday night, then Pellistri is likely going to have to pursue a permanent exit.
