Fabian Ruiz future unclear amid United links and contract expiring in 2023

Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz who has attracted interest from Manchester United could leave the Serie A leaders in the summer with his contract expiring next year.

Come the summer transfer window, the Spanish international will have less than 12 months to run on his current Napoli deal.

According to Tuttomercatoweb, Ruiz is not going to renew his contract with Luciano Spalletti’s side and that could force the Italian giants to cash in.

The same report states that Manchester United have been linked with a move for the 25-year-old.

Napoli’s number eight has already produced his best goalscoring campaign in Serie A this season with six goals and three assists to his name from 22 games. He scored the crucial 94th-minute winner in Sunday’s 2-1 win at Lazio.

According to WhoScored, Ruiz is Napoli’s best performer this season with a rating of 7.22. The box-to-box midfielder is currently averaging 1.7 tackles per game, as well as 1.3 shots and 1.2 key passes.

Ruiz’s contract situation is likely to put Europe’s heavyweights on red alert.

Manchester United are likely to be no different and with our midfield department potentially facing a major upheaval in the summer, Ruiz could form part of the Red Devils plans.

A lot will depend on the new manager’s transfer targets, but with uncertainty surrounding the futures of Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek, United’s need for reinforcements will only intensify.

The left-footed former Real Betis man could be a direct replacement for fellow left-footer Matic.

Although Ruiz isn’t as defensively astute as the Serbian when he was at his dominant best, Ruiz’s technical qualities could improve United when in possession.

United still look laboured in possession and our transition from back to front is far to slow. We need ball-playing midfielders who can penetrate the opposition’s defensive lines with quick and incisive forwards passes.

Question marks would be raised about Ruiz’s ability to adapt to the frantic pace and physical rigours of the Premier League.

It’s no secret that midfield signings are likely to be the priority in the summer for United and Ruiz could be a player who is pursued given his contract situation.
