FA Youth Cup winner lined up for new Man Utd exit alongside Alejandro Garnacho, it could be the right call

Manchester United are trimming the squad this summer and there are some tough calls being made.

Player sales have been slow for Manchester United this summer, with the club struggling to find buyers for Antony, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and Alejandro Garnacho among others.

This comes despite Garnacho’s high potential, evident since he scored his first ever goal for the club back in 2022. A fallout with Ruben Amorim has put Garnacho on the market.

Another player who could leave the club is Garnacho’s FA Youth Cup winning teammate, Sam Mather.

Sam Mather lined up for exit

Sam Mather could be the latest Manchester United youngster to leave the club, according to the BBC.

It is claimed Mather is looking for a loan move abroad that could include a permanent clause in the deal.

Mather went on the US tour in 2024 but did not land a loan move or first team chances. He was then sent on loan to Tranmere Rovers in January, and played only twice.

The previous season Mather had spent time on loan at Rochdale. Another loan to a lower league English club does not appeal to the creative midfielder.

The BBC report states: “Mather’s technical abilities make him more suited to playing abroad than in the EFL, with the potential for a permanent deal likely to be part of any arrangement.”

Sam Mather would be latest FA Youth Cup winner to exit

Sam Mather was not included on Manchester United’s 32-man tour squad to the US this summer, and it is clear he won’t get a first team opportunity this season.

The 20-year-old has not yet made an appearance for the club, and it is time for him to move on and start afresh. A move abroad could be a smart decision.

Mather played a key role in United’s FA Youth Cup victory, but so did Isak Hansen-Aaroen and Marc Jurado, who have left the club and failed to live up to their early hype.

During the run to the final in 2022, Mather played a key role, but his development has stalled since, and despite signing a new deal in 2024, this summer is the right time for both club and player to move on.
