Former Manchester United coach Neil Wood has been axed by Salford City as Gary Neville looks for yet another manager.

There have been some real success stories emerging from United’s coaching ranks of late.

Michael Carrick has impressed as Middlesbrough manager after been a part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s staff.

Kieran McKenna is now one of the hottest names in coaching having worked wonders as Ipswich Town boss.

Not everybody can be an immediate success in management though and former United man Neil Wood has found that out the hard way…

Wood came up in the United ranks as a player before going on to play for the likes of Coventry City, Blackpool, Oldham Athletic and Zeljeznicar.

United welcomed Wood back to the club in 2014 as he started on a coaching path which would see him coach all the way up from Under-15 to Under-23 level.

Wood decided to leave United in 2022, taking over as the new Salford City boss just as Erik ten Hag came in at Old Trafford.

Gary Neville and co plucked Wood away from United and handed him his first managerial job, with all seemingly going well in his first season.

Wood guided Salford into the League Two play-offs, only to lose out on penalties in a semi-final defeat to Stockport County.

The hope was that Salford would kick on again this term but that hasn’t happened with Wood winning just one of his last nine League Two outings.

Salford now sit 21st in League Two and the 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Tranmere Rovers on Boxing Day has proven to be the end for Wood.

Salford have today announced that Wood has been sacked, leaving Neville to look for another manager with his Ammies project currently stuck in the fourth tier.

Gary Neville searching for another manager

United boss Ten Hag has come under huge scrutiny this season but Neville has consistently recommended backing the Dutchman rather than sacking him.

Things have been a little different at Salford since sacking Graham Alexander back in October 2020.

Richie Wellens came in but lasted less than five months before Gary Bowyer took over for just more than a year.

Wood was the next man up but, just after Christmas, Salford co-owner and figurehead Neville is now looking for another manager.

The timing isn’t ideal, just days after Christmas and days after Neville slated the timing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s investment into United being confirmed.

Neville and co clearly felt that they had to act after a heavy Boxing Day defeat and it remains to be seen where Wood ends up having been so highly rated in the United coaching setup.
