Ethan Laird sends message to Manchester United fans

Ethan Laird came off the bench for Manchester United against Melbourne Victory to make his first appearance for the senior side since 2019.

While just a friendly match, this was an opportunity Laird did not get in either of the last two pre-seasons, due to injury.

So he was thrilled to get a chance in the second half in Australia, coming off the bench at half-time in United’s 4-1 win.

Ethan Laird impressed in United’s 4-1 win

Laird was quietly impressive in his 45 minutes of action in a United shirt. He completely shut down Melbourne Victory from an attacking perspective down his side, staying untroubled as United dominated the second half.

He linked up well with teammates Tahith Chong and Zidane Iqbal, and was frequently trying to offer an attacking outlet and give an option on the overlap.

Laird fizzed in one low cross which caused danger inside the box and almost led to a United shot.

Speaking to MUTV after the game, manager Erik ten Hag said he wanted to learn more about his young players, adding: “That’s why we took them [Chong and Laird] with us. I want to have an impression from all the players and give them the chance to show what they’re capable of.”

Laird’s pace and desire were clear to see in the second half, with the youngster keen to make the most of his opportunity.

Right-back is a very open spot for United this summer, with Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka yet to nail down the position. Wan-Bissaka was overlooked entirely for this game, with Laird given a chance.

He will hope he has done enough to get a further look in the next two pre-season games of tour against Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. If Erik ten Hag was impressed, then more game time awaits.
