When Manchester United look back at what we learned from the first stretch of this season, and specifically the Europa League campaign, Alejandro Garnacho‘s emergence will be high on the list.
The 18-year-old scored Manchester United’s winning goal last night, making just his second start for the club.
United needed somebody to step up, with Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Antony on the injured list, and Marcus Rashford not fit enough to start.
Garnacho delivered, even though his teammates were unable to add to his 17th minute strike and extend United’s 1-0 lead, falling just short of securing top spot in the group.
Manager Erik ten Hag spoke highly of the teenager after the game, expressing his admiration for him.

Ten Hag says United have a new first team player
Ten Hag spoke to describe Garnacho as an ‘extra player’, confirming he now views that he has made the first team leap.
While this was evident with his man of the match display against Sheriff Tiraspol a week ago, now Garnacho has scored his first goal for the club, it really proves his emergence.
The Dutchman told the club’s official website: “Let’s look at the positives from tonight. We have an extra player with Garnacho.
“He did well and I hope he can keep going in this process. He was reliable defending, he worked hard, he was a threat and he scored a goal so I am happy. If he can keep this process going, I’m really happy.”
Ten Hag’s comments on his happiness with Garnacho’s defensive work are just as pleasing to hear as his comments on his attacking qualities.
This suggests the manager will be comfortable giving him further chances. Whether one comes against Aston Villa at the weekend may depend on the fitness of other first team stars.
If not, he should get more game time in the Carabao Cup next week, a tie being held at Old Trafford.
Manchester United fans have had high hopes for Garnacho since he joined the club in 2020 from Atletico Madrid, and saw him lead the under-18s team to a first FA Youth Cup victory since 2011, earlier this year.
It is fantastic to see how he has stepped up, and now Ten Hag has given his seal of approval, we should see plenty more of him – but as he points out, the onus is on Garnacho to keep up the good work.
