Erik ten Hag says he is unhappy with Cristiano Ronaldo

Erik ten Hag has criticised Cristiano Ronaldo after he left Manchester United’s stadium early during the friendly with Rayo Vallecano.

Ronaldo was pictured leaving Old Trafford before the final whistle on Sunday, after being substituted at half-time.

The Mail reported that United had ‘no issue’ with Ronaldo’s actions. Erik ten Hag does not feel the same way.

In the first signs of fracture between the star player and manager, Ten Hag has criticised Ronaldo’s decision as ‘unacceptable’.

Ten Hag says he is unhappy with Ronaldo

Speaking to Dutch outlet Viaplay, reported by, Ten Hag said: “I certainly don’t condone this. This is unacceptable. For everyone.

“We are a team and you have to stay until the end.”

Ten Hag’s stance is understandable. Since joining United, he has started to turn the club around, and discipline is one of his key principles.

The Mail report how Ten Hag is a stickler for punctuality and wants his players to work off the field as a team, and so seeing players leave a stadium before a game is finished, flies in the face of that.

It’s good to see Ten Hag laying down the law like this, but it is going to be a story which dominates the build-up to United’s season opener.

Diogo Dalot was also pictured leaving the stadium early, but he did not play in the game.

Ronaldo has only played in one pre-season match and so is behind on his match fitness and sharpness. He is not expected to start at the weekend.

Whether he will even make the squad, is another matter. Ten Hag will make the final decision over the wantaway forward.

Ronaldo is proving to be an unwelcome distraction for Ten Hag at present, however, he is light on strike options, and the squad needs strengthening before the transfer deadline.
