Erik ten Hag raves about one Manchester United player’s displays in training

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has praised Lisandro Martinez as being one of the best trainers at the club.

You could argue that Lisandro Martinez is the key lieutenant for Erik ten Hag.

If he’s fit, he starts and he was one of the first signings of the Ten Hag era, following the United boss from Ajax.

Martinez’s injury woes have been a major problem for United as there just aren’t many players like him around – especially in the United squad.

Ten Hag may well want another naturally left-sided centre back this summer to cover for Martinez, but the Argentinian is clearly his main man…

Erik ten Hag on Lisandro Martinez

Ten Hag has spoken to TNT Sports whilst in conversation with former United defender Rio Ferdinand.

Ferdinand asked who sets the standards during training as Paul Scholes did under Sir Alex Ferguson many, many years ago.

Ten Hag unsurprisingly named the likes of Raphael Varane and Casemiro, who should be leading the charge after winning multiple Champions League crowns at Real Madrid.

The United boss also named Martinez, suggesting that he is always ’so switched-on’ during training sessions.

Martinez allegedly wants to win no matter what the situation is, giving his all in small games at Carrington.

“Raphael Varane, Casemiro, Bruno (Fernandes), and Licha Martinez, when he is on the training pitch, he is always (on the) front foot, always so switched on,” said Ten Hag. “He always wants to win, even in small games,” he added.

A frustrating season

Martinez is such a key player for United and yet we have hardly seen him in action this season.

The 26-year-old has only managed seven league starts this season and one more appearance from the bench.

Injuries have cruelly struck Martinez down on numerous occasions this season and it may result in United signing another left-footed defender this summer.

Martinez would still be Ten Hag’s top man – if he’s still in charge – but he really needs to avoid injury next season or big questions will be asked about him.
