Wout Weghorst’s move to FC Twente rekindles his relationship with former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, albeit in a different capacity.
Back in January, Erik ten Hag was named as technical director of Dutch Eredivisie side FC Twente, signing a deal through to the summer of 2028.
This came after the former Manchester United manager’s brief stint in Germany, where he was dismissed as Bayer Leverkusen coach after just three competitive games in charge.
That happened after Ten Hag’s two-year spell at Old Trafford, where he won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, before being given his marching orders by Ineos in 2024 following a run of underwhelming results.

It is claimed Ugarte could miss 9-12 months through his knee injury.
Erik ten Hag pleased after signing Wout Weghorst for FC Twente
FC Twente have reached an agreement to sign former United loanee Wout Weghorst on a two-year deal following his exit from Ajax, where he scored 20 goals over two seasons.
It comes as a big coup for the Eredivisie side as technical director Ten Hag previously worked with Weghorst during a short spell at United.
Ten Hag undeniably used his influence behind the scenes to finalise the agreement, even though Weghorst is currently at the 2026 World Cup as part of the Netherlands squad.
The former United manager expressed delight at the signing. He told FC Twente’s official website that the club was ‘proud’ of the deal.
“We are immensely proud that Wout Weghorst will be playing for FC Twente,” Ten Hag said.
“Who wouldn’t be thrilled when an Oranje striker with over fifty international appearances joins your club?
“This transfer is a golden opportunity for us. He is a top-class professional and the ultimate example of what a footballer can achieve when they give it their absolute all. A player with such an impressive track record is normally out of reach for FC Twente.
“He has always shown immense willpower and drive, and he is bursting with ambition. As a local boy, Wout is highly motivated to achieve something special here. We are convinced he will play a key role in FC Twente’s future success. Wout is going to bring us that little bit extra.”

Wout Weghorst yet to appear at 2026 World Cup
Although Ronald Koeman brought Weghorst to the World Cup as part of his 26-man squad, the 33-year-old striker has yet to make an appearance at the tournament this summer.
Other attackers in the Netherlands squad include Memphis Depay, Brian Brobbey, and Donyell Malen.
Weghorst will have to wait for his opportunity if one occurs.
The Dutch will face Morocco in the Round of 32 after topping Group F with two wins and one draw in three group matches.
