Erik ten Hag praises Marcus Rashford for getting into position to score

Erik ten Hag promised he would try to find solutions after Anthony Martial was ruled out of Manchester United’s opening game of the season.

Ten Hag started without a central striker, and the gamble did not pay off, and Cristiano Ronaldo was brought on early in the second half. United still lost the game 2-1.

After the defeat, Ten Hag chose to speak about Marcus Rashford, who missed two chances, but his manager was pleased with his movement.

The Manchester United manager told the club website he felt he could use Rashford as a striker if needed, but feels his position is best on the left wing.

Ten Hag praises Marcus Rashford

Ten Hag felt that Rashford getting into goalscoring opportunities justified the choice to start him on the left rather than as a centre-forward.

He said: “We have two strikers, maybe a third one with Rashford as well, you could see him as a striker.

“He had a really good pre-season on the left side and also today had two really good chances, coming in from the left side, so I think it was the right decision to do it like this.”

He added: “Rashford had two really good chances and it’s a pity we didn’t score to make it 2-2.”

Rashford scored three times in pre-season, and United will want to get him up and running finding the net for real this season.

He has not scored a competitive goal since January – although the encouraging news for him is he visits Brentford next weekend, at a stadium where he did score at the start of the year in a 3-1 win.

United begin the season with no momentum, and it won’t be easy away at Brentford next weekend, despite the win there last season.

Rashford only scored five goals in total in 2021/22. If he wants to make it into England’s World Cup squad, he will have to surpass this total before we reach November.
