Erik ten Hag has selected Manchester United’s best player during their disastrous Champions League campaign,as they recorded just one win.

Manchester United recorded just one win out of six Champions League group games with that victory being by a single goal against FC Copenhagen at Old Trafford.

That win wasn’t even an easy one with the Danish side having a last-minute penalty which was saved brilliantly by Andre Onana, which kept the Red Devils’ hopes in the competition alive.

It was the defensive displays in the other games that cost the Red Devils progression into the Champions League knockout stages with United conceding more than three goals on four separate occasions.

Ten Hag names United’s best CL player

Speaking in the aftermath of United’s defeat to Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern, Ten Hag name-dropped one player he believed to be one of the club’s better performers in the competition.

“Football is always when you don’t get the points, it’s that you are not qualifying,” Ten Hag told the United website. You have to take that, as a coach and a manager, and you have to look at the performances. We had some good performances in the Champions League, with attacking football, but, at the end of the day, we don’t have the points to qualify.

“We have to accept it and learn from it. We’ve played some good football in the Champions League; for example, Rasmus Hojlund scored five times and that’s a very good performance, and he has to take that belief into the Premier League. I think that counts for the whole team.”

Hojlund’s promise

Rasmus Hojlund was bullied at Old Trafford against Bayern Munich but, apart from that game, the Danish forward has been in top form during the European campaign.

With five goals in Europe this season, the Danish striker has proven he can do it on the big stage despite his lack of goals in the Premier League.

Hojlund has been under the cosh recently with his struggles in England causing criticism for the 20-year-old. However, for any fans who are critical of the Danish striker, his Champions League performances should prove these doubters wrong.
