Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag rotated some players into the team last night. Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof came into the line-up.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka meanwhile had to settle yet again for a place on the substitutes bench.

Three years on from his £50 million move from Crystal Palace, Wan-Bissaka exists as a back-up right-back who his manager would prefer not to use at all.

Last night’s defeat to Real Sociedad was a bad night for Wan-Bissaka, without even playing.

If Luke Shaw had been fit then he would have started at left-back. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was fit to play, and was left out.

Diogo Dalot was preferred at right-back, as he has been for every single game this season.

But the real kicker came when Dalot was substituted at half-time for Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof was shunted out to right-back.

Lindelof is no right-back, and this was apparent in the second half. He was unable to effectively contribute to the attack, and he was caught out of position at the back.

Wan-Bissaka has so far played just four minutes of football all season. This match was his opportunity to get some action.

Perhaps he may have better luck next week, when United face Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League. But it seems like United can hardly afford to rotate now, after losing the opening group fixture.

Wan-Bissaka played a minimal role in pre-season, failing to start any of the matches on the team’s pre-season tour.

The Athletic reported last week that Ten Hag was keen to sell Wan-Bissaka in the transfer window. Football director John Murtough asked him to reconsider. The plain fact was United did not have a buyer.

United are then left with the situation of being stuck with a player who the manager doesn’t want, or rate. Wan-Bissaka clearly hasn’t won him over yet.

Last night’s snub was another blow for the defender, and it’s clear United need to strengthen the right-back position in January or the summer. Wan-Bissaka may not be an option Ten Hag fancies, but Lindelof playing at the position should be even less appealing.
