Erik ten Hag gives verdict on Andre Onana’s shocking performance

Andre Onana has had a rather torrid time at Manchester United since he completed his £43 million move to the club from Inter Milan.

It was clear after David De Gea’s torrid end to the season, which included a disastrous mistake against Sevilla in the Europa League and against Manchester City in the FA Cup final, that a new goalkeeper was needed.

Andre Onana was seen as the goalkeeper that Manchester United needed, with his ball-playing ability and confidence in claiming crosses – he was seen as a superb modern-day goalkeeper.

But, after playing two Champions League games, there’s an argument to be made that his mistakes have cost United in both games.

Erik ten Hag on Onana

United manager Erik ten Hag has received criticism over the decision to play Onana and not start Altay Bayindir, the summer signing from Fenerbahce.

The Cameroonian made a costly error which not only gave the Turkish side a penalty but also led to the dismissal of Casemiro who simply had to make the challenge to deny Galatasaray from retaking the lead.

It turns out that Casemiro’s decision was the wrong one as the Turkish side went on to win the game barely five minutes after Mauro Icardi missed the penalty.

Speaking after the game, via Laurie Whitwell, Ten Hag was keen to defend his number one: “We are happy with our goalkeeping group. Andre was in one semi-final, last season in a final of Champions League.

“(He) Can be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. We have seen already his great capabilities + also his personality. He will bounce back.”

Should United fans worry about Onana

Onana was at fault for Bayern Munich’s first goal against United and the goalkeeper is now to blame for the goals scored by the Turkish side.

United fans, however, should not be worried about Onana just yet. The goalkeeper needs time and hasn’t actually had enough time with a settled back four, yet.

Onana, like any other new signing, needs time to adapt to the pressure of Manchester United.

A goalkeeper, who was arguably man of the match in a Champions League final against Manchester City, deserves time and patience.
