Erik ten Hag explains how Lisandro Martinez reacted in dressing room to injury blow

Erik ten Hag is trying to be optimistic over Lisandro Martinez’s injury, with the full extent yet to become clear.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he spoke with Lisandro Martinez following the game and they are not panicking.

Martinez had to be helped off the pitch in the second half after suffering what looked to be a serious non contact injury.

The Argentina defender looked disconsolate as he was helped off, head in his hands, leaving Old Trafford on a stretcher.

Ten Hag says Martinez calm

Erik ten Hag says Lisandro Martinez is relatively calm in response to the injury blow, which could be a good sign.

Ten Hag told club media: “I cannot tell what it is, but is not an Achilles.

“I have spoken with him and he is okay and he is calm.

“I think [it is] an injury [that means] he will not play on Sunday. I cannot say what the diagnosis [is]. I prefer to wait and to know what it is.”

Losing Martinez will be a blow for Manchester United, whether it is for one game, two games, or the rest of the season.

It is positive news that it is not an Achilles injury. These can take up to a year to recover from.

One possibility is that Martinez has broken a metatarsal, which would potentially end his season. But we don’t know anything for certain at this stage, other than what Ten Hag has revealed.

Manchester United’s injuries are piling up, with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho already sidelined along with Luke Shaw, while Raphael Varane also picked up a knock against Sevilla too.

The fixtures are showing no signs of slowing down either. United will have to move forward, with or without Martinez.
