Manchester United manger Erik ten Hag has been delighted with the impact summer signing Christian Eriksen has had at the club.

The 30-year-old joined the Red Devils as a free agent and signed a three-year deal after opting to join the twenty-time league champions over re-signing with Brentford, following the expiry of his short-term contract in West London.

United’s number 14 missed Sunday’s goalless draw against Newcastle United at Old Trafford through illness.

But ahead of tomorrow night’s clash against Eriksen’s former club Tottenham Hotspur, Ten Hag remains hopeful that the Denmark playmaker will be fit to return against Antonio Conte’s Spurs.

Speaking to club media ahead of a press conference at Carrington, Ten Hag said: “[With Christian] Eriksen, we have to wait. He was just on the pitch. We have to see how he recovers from that and then we will make a decision tomorrow.”

Prior to missing Sunday’s stalemate against the Magpies, Eriksen had started all eight of United’s Premier League matches and had featured in all 12 of our matches across all competitions.

When asked whether he was surprised about Eriksen’s impact since arriving at Old Trafford, Ten Hag said: “No, of course, I’ve known him a long time.

“Everyone knows he developed at Ajax, I knew him from the Netherlands, but as a manager I have faced him, so I knew his capabilities and I was so happy that we could sign him.

“I think he has proved from the first day how important he is to our game.”

From 12 appearances this season, the influential and talismanic Scandinavian has laid on three assists.

Manchester United looked bereft of ideas without our midfield maestro against the Toon Army, and after being signed on a Bosman – the arrival of Eriksen has all the makings of becoming one of the club’s best ever pieces of business.

As well as potentially facing former club Spurs, Eriksen could be set for a reunion with his former Inter Milan manager Conte, and the pair won Serie A together.
