Erik ten Hag comments on Marcus Rashford’s fitness after Manchester United beat Barcelona

Erik ten Hag was asked about the fitness of Marcus Rashford ahead of Manchester United’s EFL Cup final clash with Newcastle.

Rashford did not last the full 90 minutes of United’s 2-1 win over Barcelona last night, and took his boot off as he walked around the side of the pitch.

Ten Hag has conducted his pre-match press conference, and understandably, one of the main topics of conversation was Rashford’s fitness.

Rashford has been in exceptional form for United this season but had a quiet game last night, and Ten Hag said he is awaiting a diagnosis from his medical team.

Erik Ten Hag asked about Marcus Rashford injury at press conference

Ten Hag said: “I don’t know, the players now are coming in.

“We have to do a medical investigation, we did straight after the game, but most of time you have to wait for a 100 per cent diagnosis.”

He was also asked later on whether fellow forward Anthony Martial would be fit to play against Newcastle, and replied: “No (he) is not available.”

We would not expect much more news to come out ahead of the game, at the very least to keep Newcastle guessing on Rashford’s fitness.

It would be a major blow if Rashford is out, but further examinations will tell Ten Hag more, and he will not want Newcastle to know ahead of time whether the England international will be out or not.

With Martial missing, Wout Weghorst seems set to continue in attack, despite being removed at half-time of last night’s 2-1 win.

Ten Hag has proved himself adept at changing matches from the bench so far this season, and he will hope to have Rashford in his side from the start here.
