Erik ten Hag has approved Manchester United’s plan to offer 18-year-old wonderkid Alejandro Garnacho a new contract, says Fabrizio Romano.

The Argentina Under-20 international is yet to feature under the former Ajax manager during pre-season.

Despite returning to Carrington early following his international exploits at the Toulon Tournament, the former Atletico Madrid youngster hasn’t played under the club’s fifth permanent manager since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

While the likes of Zidane Iqbal, Charlie Savage and Hannibal Mejbri have featured during Tour 22, last season’s FA Youth Cup star is patiently waiting for his chance to impress his new manager in a first team match.

But despite Garnacho not playing a part in Ten Hag’s first four games in charge, the 52-year-old is ‘totally convinced’ of his talents and the Dutchman has ‘approved’ the club’s plans to offer our number 75 a new long-term contract, according to Romano.

“Ten Hag is really convinced of the skills of this boy (Garnacho).” Romano said on YouTube. “Lets see if Man United will decide to keep him or send him on loan during the window.

“But the idea of the club is to offer him a new contract. It’s also approved by the manager. Contract discussions will be ongoing with Garnacho.”

Given that Garnacho hasn’t featured during the pre-season tour, it seems clear that Ten Hag feels that the youngster’s development will be best served by playing under-23s football this season, or possibly being sent out on loan.

However, if United were to suffer a couple of injuries in the forward areas, Garnacho could find himself part of the first team fold and any potential loan move could well be put on the backburner, due to United not having a wealth of attacking options.

After firing United to FA Youth Cup success last season and being crowned the tournament’s top scorer, as well as making his first team debut, Garnacho’s emergence was one of the few success stories we could cling onto.

Although he hasn’t made his first bow under Ten Hag, judging by Romano’s comments, Garnacho is very much part of the two-time Eredivisie winner’s long-term plans at Manchester United.
