Erik ten Hag absolutely adamant Manchester United star will be successful

Erik ten Hag has delivered his latest backing of Rasmus Hojlund who has still yet to score in the Premier League.

Rasmus Hojlund, who joined Manchester United from Atalanta in the summer for £64 million, has failed to find the back of the net in the Premier League so far.

In Europe, however, it is a different story for the Danish forward. In the Champions League, Hojlund has netted five times in Europe’s premier competition and looks to be at ease.

In the Premier League, it has been a struggle for the 20-year-old forward but the Dane has hardly had any chances to really break his duck in England.

Ten Hag on Hojlund

Unsurprisingly, as he has done throughout the season, Erik ten Hag has backed his big-money striker to score.

“If you score in the Champions League five times, you will score also in the Premier League, it’s just a matter of time,” the Dutchman told the United website.

“As long as we, as a team, are creating the chances, and as long as he is convinced, I believe he will start scoring goals.”

It does seem just a matter of time before the Danish forward scores his first Premier League goal, but he may have to wait to end that drought as the 20-year-old suffered an injury against Luton Town at Old Trafford before the international break.

Hojlund’s problem

The problem when playing as a striker at United, compared to other top sides in the division, is that you don’t get as many chances to score.

Looking at his FBREF statistics compared to Erling Haaland’s FBREF numbers, for example, is tough reading. The Danish striker has accumulated just 2.5 expected goals in 9 Premier League games this season, compared to Haaland’s 12.7 xG in 13 games.

As well as this, the 20-year-old striker has just 1.95 shots on target per 90 minutes, compared to the Norwegian’s 3.70 per 90 minutes.

Hojlund just does not get many chances in good positions. His miss against Luton, which should have hit the back of the net, was the first guilt-edged chance he has really had this season.

In fact, that chance for Hojlund, which came off his knee, generated 0.70 of his total xG of 2.5, which really highlights the stark lack of chances the former Sturm Graz striker is getting.
