Eric Bailly suffers another injury in Marseille match

Eric Bailly‘s career at Manchester United was blighted by injury and his loan spell at Marseille is following a similar pattern.

The Ivory Coast international was selected as a starter for Marseille last night in their most important Ligue 1 game of the season to date, against rivals Paris Saint-Germain.

The chance to go up against Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe was the perfect game for Bailly to make a statement and show what he was capable of.

And for 44 minutes he did. Then once again, injury struck.

Bailly suffers another injury

Eric Bailly’s game summed up his career to date. He was excellent during his time on the pitch, and could not last even the first half.

For the first 44 minutes, Bailly was terrific, refusing to let PSG’s star-studded attack past him.

He won four of six duels, making two clearances and winning one tackle, while taking no prisoners, scything down Lionel Messi when the Argentine tried to get past him.

But as we have seen so often, Bailly’s combative style does not correlate with durability, and he soon sustained a knock which forced him off.

Bailly had to be helped off the pitch after injuring himself attempting to tackle Juan Bernat.

Then in first half injury time, PSG took the lead when Mbappe set up Neymar to score. This ended up being the decisive goal.

This was just Bailly’s second start in Ligue 1 this season. He has made four Champions League starts in addition to this.

Already this is the second mid-game injury Bailly has suffered which has forced him off. He was taken off after 65 minutes with a knock in Marseille’s match with Eintracht Frankfurt last month.

At the beginning of his loan, Bailly made headlines when he told The Times he was frustrated with a lack of trust at Manchester United, feeling English players were favoured.

However, with his playing style prone to inviting injury, Bailly’s poor luck has continued at Marseille, offering a reminder of why Manchester United’s various managers felt he could not be relied upon.
