Manchester United defender Eric Bailly helped Marseille to a Champions League victory over Sporting.

The Ivorian started in Marseille’s 2-0 away victory, with former Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez scoring the second goal.

Bailly lasted 64 minutes before being substituted, and he was pleased with his contribution.

Posting on Instagram after the victory, Bailly wrote: “Important victory in the Champions League. Glad I didn’t concede a goal.”

Bailly helps Marseille win

Bailly completed 97 per cent of his passes in Marseille’s win in Portugal, 36 of 37 attempted.

He won two headers and made two interceptions, with Marseille climbing above Sporting as a result of the win.

They sit in second place in the group, behind Tottenham, having won two matches and lost two so far.

This was the first clean sheet Bailly had managed in the Champions League so far, although he has contributed to two in Ligue 1.

Alvaro Fernandez features in Preston defeat

Manchester United loanee Alvaro Fernandez was also in action last night for Preston North End.

He was on the losing side as Preston were defeated 2-1 away at Bristol City, conceding an injury time winner.

Fernandez was not on the pitch at that stage, playing 77 minutes. He had managed 59 touches and created one goalscoring opportunity.

The 19-year-old has started Preston’s last five consecutive Championship games and has four assists in 11 matches in all competitions this season.
