Manchester United loanee Eric Bailly caused a stir this week with comments on the club’s selection policy last season.
He said he felt constantly overlooked with United favouring English players, his own frustration at sitting behind Harry Maguire very evident.
Bailly was speaking as a Marseille loanee, having been sent out to the French side for the season.
He had the perfect chance to prove a point over his quality last night as he was named as a starter as Marseille took on Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League.

Marseille suffer Champions League defeat
Bailly’s night started well, with Marseille holding and frustrating Tottenham Hotspur for the first hour of the game in North London.
Then former Newcastle United defender Chancel Mbemba received a red card for a last man challenge on Heung-Min Son. Bailly picked up a yellow card for dissent, protesting the sending off.
With Marseille reduced to 10 men, Tottenham’s quality eventually showed despite a stubborn resistance, with Richarlison scoring two late goals to seal a 2-0 victory.
Bailly spoke to La Provence after the defeat to bemoan his side’s defeat. He said: “We had our say, we could take at least one point. But the Champions League is played on details. We make a mistake which is expensive and at 10 it was complicated.”
The Manchester United owned centre-back gave it his all. He made six interceptions, blocked two shots and made two clearances as he attempted to shut Tottenham out.
But with his side always underdogs for the fixture, going down to 10 men made their task just too difficult.
This was Bailly’s third match in a Marseille shirt, just his second start. This move could be a productive one for him, providing he has a little more luck than last night.
