Charlie Setford, dubbed England’s future first-choice goalkeeper has chosen a Manchester United legend as the ‘most underrated player ever’.

Setford, 19, is currently playing his football for Ajax in the Eredivisie. Born in the Netherlands, he chose to represent England at youth level thanks to his dad’s heritage.

He’s making huge waves in Holland. Dubbed by the Daily Star as ‘England’s future No1’, Setford has featured prominently for Ajax’s academy sides but is yet to make a first-team appearance.

In 2022, he received the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy for the biggest talent of the youth academy, so it’s clear to see the Dutch club have high hopes for him.

Charlie Setford chooses United legend as ‘most underrated player ever’

Setford has been training with the Ajax first-team squad throughout pre-season. He was approached by the media team to give his verdict on the ‘most underrated player ever – to which he replied with ‘Paul Scholes‘.

You can see Sefton give his verdict around four seconds into the clip.

The English wonderkid evidently has great taste. Scholes is still underappreciated to this day, constantly spanning comparisons and getting put below English midfielders at the time such as Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

Another ex-Manchester United man was also named…

The rest of the squad also took part. There were a few recurring names that kept cropping up.

Manchester City’s Ilkay Gundogan was said many times, alongside Sergio Busquets and Marco Verratti. These are three fantastic players that have often been unsung heroes for their clubs.

But one name that popped up was former red Nemanja Matic – which is a great shout.

Matic was rock solid at Chelsea and during his first season in Manchester, but never really got the credit he deserved either.

Benjamin Tahirović was the player who said Matic’s name. The Bosnian midfielder has just signed for Ajax, from Roma – which makes sense as that’s where the Serbian currently resides.
