Edwin van der Sar has reached out to congratulate Jonny Evans on making his 200th appearance for Manchester United.

When Jonny Evans was sold in 2015 by former boss Louis van Gaal, he left with 198 competitive games for Manchester United to his name. And that was where it was assumed it would end.

This summer Evans made a very surprise return to Manchester United as a free agent, signed to provide defensive cover, and he has already been needed amid a succession of injuries.

Evans is now up to a milestone 200 appearances, marking it with an assist for Bruno Fernandes to score a winner against Burnley.

Jonny Evans congratulated

Jonny Evans spoke emotionally after Manchester United’s win at the weekend, telling TNT Sports: “I loved every minute of it, before the game I was getting this feeling of pure excitement, I was buzzing, I think today was my 200th game for United and it was one of the best days of my life.”

Today marks the anniversary of the day in 2007 in which Evans made his Manchester United debut.

United noted this on social media, drawing a response from former teammate Edwin van der Sar.

Evans and van der Sar were part of two Premier League title-winning squads together, with the defender winning a third in 2012/13 after the Dutchman had retired.

A long way since Evans debut

Earlier today we took a look back at the starting XI from Jonny Evans’ debut back in 2007.

Van der Sar did not start that game, with understudy Tomasz Kuszcsak rotated in his place. It ended in a 2-0 loss to Coventry City.

It is uncertain if Evans will start against Crystal Palace tonight and make his 201st appearance. If he does, he will want the first EFL Cup game of his second spell, to go a lot better than the first.
