Edinson Cavani targeting La Liga move once Manchester United contract ends

Edinson Cavani has his heart set on a summer move to La Liga when his Manchester United contract expires at the end of June.

It’s been a frustrating second season at Old Trafford for the 35-year-old as he has been riddled with injury setbacks and fitness struggles.

The Uruguayan’s inability to stay fit as he enters the twilight stages of his career has vindicated Manchester United’s decision to bring Cristiano Ronaldo home in the closing stages of the summer transfer window.

However, El Matador’s lack of availability means that Ronaldo’s workload at the age of 37 cannot be reduced due to the lack of options interim boss Ralf Rangnick has at his disposal.

But after playing in England, France and Italy, the Guardian report that United’s number 21 wants to experience playing in another of Europe’s major leagues before he retires.

The newspaper states that the former Paris Saint Germain has already received approaches from La Liga clubs.

After scoring 17 goals last season, it was hoped that Cavani could have the same devastating impact, but his body has let him down on too many occasions.

He wasn’t pictured training at Carrington yesterday which indicates he won’t be available to return for the Manchester derby on Sunday.

If he misses the trip to the Etihad it would mean that Cavani has missed all five games we have played against City across the last two seasons.

The South American striker hasn’t featured for the Reds since coming off to be replaced by Ronaldo at Burnley last month.

With crucial clashes against Tottenham and Atletico Madrid on the horizon, having the influential striker fit for those games would be a massive boost for the squad and Rangnick.

But as it stands it looks like Cavani’s time in Manchester looks to be fizzling out, which is a shame because if we would have had him when he was in his prime he would have undoubtedly been remembered as a cult hero.

But when he eventually leaves in the summer, there will be that underlying sense of ‘what if’ when it comes to Cavani’s fitness.
