Edinson Cavani scores more goals in three Uruguay games than he did all season for Manchester United

Manchester United made the welcome decision to release Edinson Cavani this summer rather than try to persuade the striker to stay for another year.

Although even if United had offered Cavani an extension, he probably wouldn’t have signed. It became clear this season that Cavani’s heart just wasn’t in it.

He even admitted to ESPN Brasil last month he would have quit Old Trafford if he knew Cristiano Ronaldo was signing for the club.

Unsurprisingly, Cavani seems to have rediscovered his form playing for Uruguay this summer.

Cavani scores more goals than he did all season for United

In just three international games in June, Edinson Cavani has now scored four goals.

He hit braces against Mexico and Panama, drawing a blank against USA in between. These were Cavani’s first goals since netting in a win over Venezuela back in February.

In doing so, Cavani exceeded his Manchester United tally for the season, doubling it.

The veteran striker scored only two goals this past season in 20 appearances, against Tottenham and Newcastle.

Part of the problem was Cavani just didn’t play enough, yet, for all of his injury problems, he did not miss a single international break for fitness reasons.

He played in only 15 out of a possible 38 Premier League matches. Not once was he an unused substitute, every time he was in the squad, he got onto the pitch.

Right now Cavani is highly motivated to find a new club, he will be a free agent officially from the end of June.

ESPN reported last week he had been approached by Mexican club Toluca over a potential deal, although he is still weighing up his options.
