Edinson Cavani in talks with Mexican club Toluca

Departing striker Edinson Cavani is in talks with Mexican club Toluca, report ESPN.

Cavani’s departure from Manchester United was confirmed with a farewell interview last month, with his contract officially expiring on June 30.

He is busy assessing his options for his next move, and has a surprise offer to move to Mexico.

Cavani in talks with Mexican club

Cavani is holding ‘serious talks’ with Toluca, ESPN claim, with a first offer presented to him.

Ole Argentina report Cavani has been offered a £8 million per year deal. This represents a dip on the £13 million a year he was earning at Manchester United.

While Cavani and his representatives are studying the offer, his preference is still claimed to be for a move to Europe.

El Pais Uruguay report there is hope in Argentina that he could still sign with one of the top clubs there.

Cavani’s priority is to find the best sporting project to allow him to go to World Cup 2022 in the best shape.

This is a tricky balance to strike, because unlike at United, he will want to be first choice, while also not wanting to be over-exerted and suffer an injury.

Excited reaction in Mexico to potential move

The possibility of Cavani heading to Mexico is generating plenty of excitement in the country, with 90Min’s MX League writer Gerardo Cardenas claiming in a headline, ‘Edinson Cavani could be the signing of the century in Liga MX’.

El Futbolero Mexico report: “It is a more than real option,”, but adds a twist to the mix, that Cavani’s Uruguay international colleague Jonathan Rodriguez has recommended to the striker that he joins his former club Cruz Azul instead.

TV Azteca report Cavani to Toluca would be a ‘bombshell’ signing, which could help Toluca turn their current poor form around.

Cavani has just been in Mexico with the Uruguay national team, scoring twice in a 3-0 friendly win, assisted for one of them by Facundo Pellistri.

His performance and status as a top star have clearly generated a lot of excitement, but as Manchester United fans saw last season, the thought of Cavani is better than the reality at this stage of his career.

The smart money would be on Cavani signing with a European club, but if he wants a completely fresh challenge, where he would be adored, a move to Mexico may be a very exciting option.
