Eddie Howe has praised one Manchester United player in particular following Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over the Red Devils.
Anthony Gordon struck for Newcastle United 10 minutes into the second half to condemn Manchester United to another Premier League defeat.
It’s been a tough week for Erik ten Hag’s side following their 3-3 draw against Galatasaray in Turkey and things, once again, don’t appear to be rosy in the garden.
It’s hard to pick out any players who were deserving of praise for the performance they put in at St James’ Park but the defence certainly deserves some credit for how they handled wave after wave of Newcastle attacks.

Howe praises United player
Speaking to TNT Sports after the game, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe was full of praise for one United player and it may come as little surprise.
“[Anthony Gordon was] up against a very good defender today in Wan-Bissaka he was very good again, physically he was so good today. It was a really good battle between the two of them,” Howe said.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, however, may well have had one of his toughest encounters against a winger in recent years as the former Everton forward was given a lot of space out wide and it was Gordon who struck the decisive blow in the game.
United’s defensive struggles
Despite how good Newcastle were on the day, they were helped in part by just how easy it was for the Magpies to play around United’s lacklustre press.
Due to the midfield and defence not being near each other, Howe’s side were able to play through it with ease and Ten Hag’s United were fortunate to just lose 1-0.
United had the ball in the net late on but Antony’s shot deflected in off Harry Maguire who was standing in an offside position.
With a tough midweek game against Chelsea on the horizon, United will need to improve drastically and Ten Hag will have to make the changes in the team that is necessary to win the game against Mauricio Pochettino’s men.
