Dwight Yorke: Why it is time for Anthony Martial to leave Manchester United

Manchester United should cut their losses on Anthony Martial this summer and move on, says Dwight Yorke.

Speaking to Talksport, the Treble winner says Manchester United need a new striker to close the gap on Manchester City.

Yorke believes Anthony Martial has had enough chances at Old Trafford, and did not even get into his extensive injury problems.

Martial started only 11 of 38 Premier League games last season despite limited competition and missed both cup finals due to fitness issues.

Anthony Martial ‘red flag’

Dwight Yorke says that the very moment Manchester United loaned Anthony Martial to Sevilla in 2022, his career at the club should have been over.

He said: “The number nine spot is an issue and well documented. Anthony Martial has been there nearly seven years, you wouldn’t have thought that.

“The moment you leave as a top player, to go on loan, that’s a worry. That’s a red flag. your best players don’t leave your club.

“I think he’s had his time, personally speaking, and so that doesn’t surprise us if he is going to leave the club.”

Martial is one of the players Manchester United are open to offers to, with The Mail reporting that the club want around £25 million for him.

This seems ambitious, considering his injury record, his £250,000 per week wages, and a contract which expires in 12 months.

Yorke on Manchester United striker signing

As for who might replace Anthony Martial, which is where it gets a little tougher, or is easier said that done.

Dwight Yorke wants the club to set their targets high, picking out Harry Kane as his preference, and Victor Osimhen as his second choice.

He said: “Harry Kane. We’ve got to close the gap on City. We don’t have time to integrate for a year or two.

“On the back of the little success United have had this year, they’ve got to close the gap and they’ve got to nail the number nine spot.

“I think in the wide areas we are fine. I think if MM comes in he will give us a bit more, probably play as a 10 occasionally, that’s a position he could influence the game a little bit, but certainly we have got enough wide players.

“If we can’t get Harry Kane we have got to get the kid at Napoli – but he’s untested in the Premier League.”
