Dwight Yorke is the latest former Manchester United player to weigh in on whether Michael Carrick should remain head coach.

Ever since Michael Carrick was appointed interim head coach in January, the 44-year-old has made a strong case to remain in the job beyond this season.

Manchester United are currently sitting third in the Premier League, on the cusp of securing Champions League qualification.

Carrick has been asked about the United job every week since stepping in as an interim coach. It’s not a secret that he has a desire to continue the role next season.

Dwight Yorke backs Michael Carrick for Man Utd job

With United all-but guaranteed Champions League football for next season, Carrick wants to finish the season strongly to avoid slipping out of third place.

According to Sky Sports, United are in no rush to make a decision on Carrick’s future. An announcement is unlikely before the end of this campaign.

That means there will be debate between now and then.

For instance, many United fans want Carrick as head coach, while there are also many who remain undecided whether he is the right man for the job.

Former United striker Dwight Yorke has told talkSPORT he doesn’t understand why there’s even a debate about Carrick getting the job.

“I don’t know why there is a huge debate about it,” Yorke said.

“You know certainly from my point of view he’s done a terrific job, an incredible job as a matter of fact, and I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t carry on in the head coach position.”

Carrick has four games left as interim head coach before a decision will be made for United’s future.

Dwight Yorke’s management career

Yorke has been working hard to get into coaching for years.

In July 2022, Yorke took charge of A-League side Macarthur Bulls, but left less than a year later in January 2023.

Yorke went on to become the manager of the Trinidad and Tobago national team in November 2024, but the team failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
