‘Don’t be afraid’… Dimitar Berbatov tells Manchester United star to ‘take risks’ to find his best form

Andre Onana’s comments that he plans to take risks this season raised a few eyebrows. It’s not what is usually expected from a goalkeeper.

When it comes to attacking players, unlike goalkeepers, taking risks is encouraged. Dimitar Berbatov has singled out one player he wants to see do it more.

Berbatov believes it is exactly what Mason Mount needs to do to really get his Manchester United career up and running.

Dimitar Berbatov backs Mason Mount

Former Manchester United striker Berbatov is a believer in Mason Mount’s talent and wants him to take the next step at Old Trafford, after an injury-hit first season.

Mount started United’s opening game against Fulham, playing the first hour, and playing an important role off the ball with his pressing.

Berbatov wants to see a little more, telling Futbin: “The talent and the quality is there. Everybody saw what he did at Chelsea, but he didn’t produce it at Man United.

“Bruno Fernandes is a similar type of player, but it is a long season and there are a lot of games to be played, and they need competition. He can make a difference with the passes and his runs.

“My only wish for him is to get through the thought that he is new and that he doesn’t want to take responsibility. It is his second season now and he needs to have a good season.”

“This is the moment to make or break, so he has to go out there and be brave. Take some chances and risks. He has the quality, so don’t be afraid, Mason.”

Mount is going one step at a time

Mason Mount’s first objective early this season has been to maintain his fitness and he has done well, featuring in every pre-season game, along with the Community Shield and league opener.

As Berbatov lays out, the next step for Mount is to be more expansive with his game and make a decisive impact in the final third.

Mount showed signs of this during pre-season, creating eight chances in five matches, and we want to see a little more of that now the season is underway.

Berbatov perhaps raises an interesting point, that Mount might not yet really feel like he has truly arrived as a Manchester United player yet.

He needs a big moment, and with a game at home to Liverpool just a fortnight away, a standout moment for United’s number seven could be within his grasp.
