Donny van de Beek visited Real Madrid ahead of potential transfer, says former agent

Donny van de Beek‘s move to Manchester United has not gone as he planned despite plenty of optimism around the transfer at the time.

United paid £35 million for the Dutchman, who had been close to a move to Real Madrid at the start of the 2020 transfer window, De Telegraaf reported.

This move fell through, with Real deciding not to sign any players that summer due to the pandemic. Their decision to shelve a move for Van de Beek opened the door for United to do a deal.

Van de Beek’s former agent Guido Albers has been speaking about his regret a deal was not done, and explained how close it was.

Van de Beek visited Real Madrid

Van de Beek’s potential move to Real Madrid was so close he visited the Spanish club in advance of a move, Albers says.

He told Voetbal Primeur he is still disappointed the move fell through: “That was really sour. It was ready.

“All clubs got into mega-problems because of corona. Other people then say to me: if they really wanted to, they would have put the money on the table . Okay, that’s possible. But if you really, really don’t have it at that moment, and you have to make different choices.”

He added that he felt Real Madrid was a ‘great opportunity’ for the midfielder despite the presence of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

Albers said: “The picture was good. We went there with his parents, went to the dressing room. We did everything. You don’t do that if you don’t transfer. The contracts were with Ajax , but in the end it didn’t work out.

“After that, he only had a few choices. Especially in Germany and Italy. United was really the biggest club in size.”

It felt like United had pulled off a coup landing Van de Beek, but it has not worked out. The midfielder has lost his place in the Netherlands squad and has started only four Premier League games for the Red Devils in two seasons.

Albers expressed his ‘disappointment’ with the way the midfielder has fared at Old Trafford and claimed other players received preferential treatment.

There’s no guarantee Van de Beek would have had more success at Real Madrid. Now he has the chance to play alongside one of the players he would have joined in Spain, with Brazilian midfielder Casemiro signing for United this summer.
