Donny van de Beek sends message to Manchester United fans

After star talent Alejandro Garnacho came off to a congratulatory ovation last night, Donny van de Beek took his place.

This was the Dutchman’s first appearance for Manchester United since the 2-1 victory over Liverpool in late August.

While too late to force his way into the Dutch squad for the World Cup, Van de Beek is simply glad to be playing again.

2022 has been another stop-start career year for him, with his loan at Everton interrupted by injury, and now his big chance at United under his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag.

There’s a case to say this season is ‘make or break’ for Van de Beek, with his career off-track since struggling to make an impact at United in three seasons to date.

Van de Beek has just four Premier League starts to his name for United, a staggeringly low figure – but last night was a moment for him to be positive.

The midfielder played the final 11 minutes against Sheriff Tiraspol, and sent a message on Instagram to say he was thrilled to make his return.

Van de Beek is back

During his short spell on the pitch Van de Beek played with energy and worked hard to try and impact the game.

He completed 10 out of 10 pass attempts, and had one effort at goal, which missed the target.

The midfielder is an asset who Erik ten Hag knows how to utilise, but first he has to stay fit. Getting back on the pitch is an important first step.

Not going to the World Cup could work in Van de Beek’s favour. He will get to work closely with Ten Hag and his staff, like a mini pre-season, and might have a big part to play in 2023.
