Donny van de Beek has praised Harry Maguire for his performance against Crystal Palace despite the Manchester United captain being booed.

From the very first moment United’s number five touched the ball boos radiated around the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

It isn’t something that will likely deter or effect the former Leicester City man as it’s something he had to contend with at Wembley when England faced Ivory Coast in March.

Despite being jeered by a 76,000-strong crowd when his name was read out on the team sheet and his first few touches of the ball, Maguire produced a commanding and dominant performance alongside Victor Lindelof.

Although Ten Hag will be reunited with his former Ajax star Lisandro Martinez, the 52-year-old has retained the England international as the club’s first team captain and Maguire could well play alongside the Argentina international.

Maguire may have lost possession straight away in the 3-1 victory against the Eagles, but he responded impressively and showcased his range of passing and ability to sniff out danger.

Maguire’s response to the boo boys was praised by Van de Beek who highlighted his captain’s display given the reception he received.

“I heard as well. I didn’t know really what happened. But I think if I saw the game today I think Harry was playing really well, ” said Van de Beek via Manchester Evening News.

“He was aggressive, he got so many balls, so that means he has a big personality.

“He has a lot of experience, so I think that’s positive what he [showed], his performance today.”

Van de Beek impressed when he came on at half-time and grabbed an assist when Marcus Rashford tapped home Manchester United’s second after an impressive sweeping move.
