Donny van de Beek gives his seal of approval following Erik ten Hag's Manchester United appointment
Donny van de Beek has given his backing to Erik ten Hag being appointed Manchester United’s new permanent manager.
The 52-year-old will head to Old Trafford when Ajax’s season finishes. The Dutch giants are four points clear of rivals PSV Eindhoven at the top of Eredivisie with five league games remaining.
The Dutch top-flight finishes on May 15 which is the week before the Premier League season finishes, so ten Hag could well be in attendance to watch United’s final game of the season at Crystal Palace.
Ten Hag joins the Red Devils on an initial three-year deal with the option of a further fourth.
He will be reunited with van de Beek who will link up the Reds in pre-season following the conclusion of his loan spell at Everton.
The 24-year-old will be hoping that linking up with his former boss proves to be the catalyst in igniting his Manchester United career.
Since signing for United for £35million, van de Beek has suffered a remarkable fall from grace. Prior to his move to the Premier League, the Dutch international was one of the most coveted midfielders across Europe.
But since arriving at Old Trafford, United’s number 34 looks to have had the confidence sucked out of him and he has struggled to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.
But the arrival of ten Hag has potentially given van de Beek a chance to prove himself in a Manchester United side.
Van de Beek, who is wearing number 30 at Everton, has liked a post from Ajax which confirmed ten Hag’s departure.
Ten Hag has previously spoken in glowing terms about van de Beek and the midfielder will be hoping that United’s new manager can get the best out of him once again.
Speaking to Voetball International in 2020, Ten Hag talked up van de Beek’s qualities and said Ajax would miss him.
“He is an absolute key player for us, a very modern midfielder with lots of depth in his play. It’s clear that we will miss him a lot once he’s gone.”
Speaking separately about van de Beek’s positional qualities, ten Hag praised him.
He told DutchSoccerSite that he can play a central midfield position when he has a true defensive midfielder alongside him, comparing him to Frenkie De Jong: “Donny is also a player who likes to be on the move. For both Donny and Frenkie it is a strength.”
Several of Manchester United’s first team squad have also liked a post which confirmed ten Hag’s appointment.
