D'Mani Mellor scores first professional goal after Manchester United release

D’Mani Mellor scored his first professional goal last night after his release from Manchester United.

The 21-year-old was released by United at the end of June and signed with League One side Wycombe Wanderers.

Last night he scored in the Carabao Cup as Wycombe beat Northampton away from home.

He swept in the team’s second goal with a cool finish, low past the onrushing goalkeeper showing great striker’s instincts.

Mellor scores first professional goal

Mellor, 21, was making his first ever professional start. He had played 16 minutes and then 4 minutes in his two substitute appearances in the league for Wycombe so far.

During a spell on loan at Salford City last season he also only made brief substitute showings.

So it was crucial he seized his moment. He certainly did. This was the dream start for the youngster as he begins his post-Manchester United career.

Mellor will hope this goal can earn him a place into Wycombe’s starting line-up in the league this weekend.

After a crushing ACL injury in July 2020, just after returning to training after lockdown, Mellor’s career could have been in doubt. With the lockdown, he effectively missed 18 months of playing time.

After returning from his Salford loan last January, Mellor led the line for Manchester United’s under-23 side and finished the season strongly with 7 goals and 3 assists in 13 games.

This form earned him his move to Wycombe, and while there was never really any case for Manchester United to retain his services and add to his one appearance made as a substitute against Astana in 2019, he now has a chance to kick on with his career.

Who knows, one day he may even make Manchester United regret that decision.
