Diogo Dalot’s assist v Southampton was his first for Manchester United since March 2019

Manchester United right-back Diogo Dalot provided the pass to set up Bruno Fernandes’ winner against Southampton.

Dalot, 23, told United’s club website he was pleased to provide the assist and knows he needs to contribute more.

He said: “I have that ability [to create and assist] so I will try to give more and to give that part to the team but I think it will come naturally.

“It’s something that I’m not completely obsessed with but it’s in my head and then I think I have the ability to do it and I put myself in that high standard to give that to the team.”

Dalot’s assist v Southampton

It was important for Dalot to get of the mark and provide an assist, his first of the season.

He provided an assist in pre-season, but this was his first in a competitive Manchester United for quite a while.

Last season Dalot frustratingly drew a blank. He did not provide any assists in 24 Premier League matches.

The assist against Southampton was Dalot’s first for Manchester United since an assist in March 2019 – also against Southampton.

Dalot played on the right wing in this game. His previous assist came in 2019 against Brighton – when he played at left-back.

So this assist against the Saints this past weekend was his first ever for Manchester United from his natural right-back position.

Dalot spent a season on loan at AC Milan during his time between assists. He provided two assists during this loan spell.

Getting off the mark this season was key. Dalot has often looked dangerous going forward, but has lacked productivity.

Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff now have to develop Dalot’s talents, and the early signs look promising.

It sounds ambitious based on his past record, but if Dalot can develop into a player who can provide 10 assists or more this season, then he will become a huge asset for the club.
