Diogo Dalot explains what he said to Raphael Varane after winning first Manchester United trophy

Diogo Dalot has opened up about his feelings after Manchester United won the Carabao Cup last season with a 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United were at their best on that day at Wembley and ran out comfortable winners in the end against Eddie Howe’s rejuvenated Newcastle United side.

Since then, however, things have not been rosy for Ten Hag and United, suffering a 7-0 defeat to Liverpool soon afterwards.

The Portuguese right-back has been speaking to club media as the international break continues and has opened up about what winning at Wembley meant to him and the message he sent to his teammates following the triumph.

Dalot on cup win

The right-back has revealed what the message was from inside the dressing room following that cup final victory with the former FC Porto man showing his leadership traits.

“I remember saying to Rapha [Varane] after when we were up there lifting the trophy ‘we have to come back here, we have to win again, we have to win more’,” Dalot said.

“Because it was really special from up there to see all the fans celebrating and everybody, the [United] half of the stadium was full. That feeling of winning is something indescribable.”

As well as this, the defender was asked where he keeps his medal, and he said: “It’s in a frame now with the shirt, I put it on the frame already and I have a replica of the trophy.”

United’s struggles since cup win

The Red Devils, as mentioned, have struggled hugely since the win at Wembley, which comes as a surprise as that moment was hoped to have been a springboard moment for this United team.

United and Dalot did have a chance to win at Wembley again, but lost the FA Cup final 2-1 to City in May.

But, struggles in the Premier League and the Champions League this season have meant that the pressure is on current United boss Ten Hag.

Dalot, however, has established himself as the first-choice full-back option, whether it’s on the right or the left and looks much more assured in his performances.

He has been one of United’s most consistent players this season and will be hoping to help the Red Devils pick up three vital points next Sunday at Goodison Park.

Dalot’s hunger to win more medals is great to hear, but it already seems like a tall order this season for the team to win any silverware.
