Diogo Dalot captures the shift in mood as Cristiano Ronaldo rewrites World Cup history

Diogo Dalot did not feature in Portugal’s opening two matches at the World Cup. Still, the Manchester United full-back was front and centre for the celebrations that took place following their convincing 5-0 win over Uzbekistan.

Portugal didn’t get the start it wanted at the 2026 World Cup, after being held to a 1-1 draw against DR Congo. Roberto Martinez’s side recorded their first win at the tournament on Tuesday night.

Bruno Fernandes played an important role for Portugal as he created an assist for Cristiano Ronaldo’s brace, but it’s debatable whether the 41-year-old striker has done enough to silence his critics.

After beating Uzbekistan 5-0, the mood in the Portugal camp has shifted in the right direction.

Diogo Dalot makes telling Cristiano Ronaldo observation after win over Uzbekistan

The spirits were high in the Portugal dressing room on Tuesday night.

Ronaldo had every reason to celebrate. The former United star opened the scoring after just six minutes and doubled his tally before the half-time interval.

Those goals saw Ronaldo become the first player to score in six World Cups. He is also the second-oldest scorer in World Cup history, aged 41 years and 138 days, only behind Cameroon legend Roger Milla.

After the match, Dalot gave Portugal fans a behind-the-scenes picture from the dressing room. It shows Ronaldo holding his Man of the Match trophy with a big grin across his face.

Dalot captured the shift in Ronaldo’s mood with his caption, writing the following caption for Instagram, as shared by Fabrizio Romano: “Smiling like a kid [laughing emojis]”

It had been a torrid week for Portugal and Ronaldo – after failing to win their first game over DR Congo, but the win over Uzbekistan will certainly help team morale.

Ronaldo and his teammates will hope for a win over Colombia because that will help Martinez’s side build momentum ahead of the knockout phase.
