October 21 2023 will not be remembered as the date Manchester United beat Sheffield United. Instead it will be forever noted as the day the club lost a true great.
Hours before kick-off at Bramall Lane, Manchester United announced the sad news Sir Bobby Charlton had passed away.
A minute’s applause was held for Sir Bobby, with players wearing black armbands, but the best tribute was go out there and win the game.

It was fitting that Manchester United’s first goal of the game was scored by an academy graduate, Scott McTominay.
And that the match winning goal from Diogo Dalot was a strike from outside the box. The great man would have approved.
It was not a easy win, with United having to show the hard work, spirit and fight that the great midfielder demonstrated throughout his career.
United players pay tribute
Manchester United’s players paid tribute to Sir Bobby Charlton with a series of post-match messages.
Goalscorer Diogo Dalot wrote: “On a sad day for our United family, we’re glad we could give some joy to Sir Bobby’s family.
“This one is for you ❤️ Thank you reds for the support as always away from home, you’re something else.”
Captain Bruno Fernandes wrote simply: “A win for Sir Bobby and his family ❤️”
Harry Maguire echoed these thoughts, adding: “A win dedicated to Sir Bobby Charlton. A legend of @manchesterunited, @england and the game of football. Thoughts are with his family and friends. ❤️”
The club legend was clearly on the players’ minds. They wanted to do him proud, and for sure, Sir Bobby Charlton would have raised a smile at the three points.
